I have a fancy for “dream catchers”

I don’t know what it is, maybe it is a memory from past lives, maybe it is just how pretty and soothing they seem to me.

However, dream catchers remind me of the importance of dreaming big, of making desires out of those dreams and of taking those desires and forging them into a plan with goals followed by inspired action.

Sometimes referred to as “Sacred Hoops,” dream catchers” originate within the Ojibwe Native American tribe and were considered as a talisman to protect their people while they slept and to protect children from nightmares.

Their shape usually consists of a small wooden hoop covered in a net or web of natural fibers, with meaningful sacred items like beads and feathers hanging down from the bottom of the hoop. Real authentic Native American dream catchers are crafted only from natural materials and handmade. I have read that the hoops used to be made from a bent Red Willow branch covered in stretched sinews and then having the frame wrapped with leather.

Dream Catchers are made in a circular form because the circle represents the cycle of life and are symbolically encompass the forces of nature such as the sun and the moon as they move rhythmically day and night across the sky.

The Native American tradition believes the night brings over dreams both good and bad, therefore, dream catchers were hung above the place where one sleeps ensuring that the morning sunlight can hit it.

The function of the “dream catcher” is to attract and catch dream thoughts, both good and bad, into its web. The feathers would allow for the good dreams to pass through and gently slide down towards the sleeper below in order to give comfort. The “spider-web” would catch the bad dreams and through its protective net it would destroy them allowing for the morning sun light to burn them as the light would catch it.
